(Substituting Political Reformation of White Finance Capitalism for Building an Independent Political Movement)

 

Barack Obama’s ascendency to the U.S. presidency has been consistently portrayed as the culmination of the African-Americans protracted struggle for “equality” in America.  In a sense it is, because all advancements secured by Africans in America have enhanced the rights of all people, but those advancements have seldom moved the majority Africans in America out of the economic and political doldrums.  The brutal truth is this portrayal is both facetious and inaccurate.

An esteemed pleasure and honor of sorts were felt on the streets among the individuals - men, women and children eagerly waiting to attend the Black and Male in America: Town Hall meeting in Brooklyn, New York recently. A sense of nostalgia filled the air of this November evening; a seemingly majestic-like aura and breeze was still fresh, celebrating the historic win of the first African-American President of the United States, Barack Obama.

     The election of Barack Hussein Obama has been greeted with well-deserved euphoria here and abroad.  A country that embraced the duplicity of slavery and democracy until the Civil War, then continued to deny Black citizens unfettered freedom for another century, then fought a civil rights revolution that still did not bring full equality -- that America has sent a Black family to the White House. Voters of all colors have announced that a Black child can grow up to become President. Many proudly see a transformative moment, a step forward for humanity, and a gentler United States.
